Client examples · James · A portfolio built around him
“I want a portfolio built around me. And I want every decision to stay mine.”
James has built up capital over the years and wants to put more of it to work. He takes an interest in his investments and wants to understand what he owns. He does not want to hand his investment decisions to a manager, but nor does he want to research and assemble a whole portfolio himself. He wants Synergy to do the investment work around what he is trying to achieve, and to bring him personal recommendations he can decide on.
James is an illustration, not a client. Nothing on this page is a recommendation or a forecast.

Meet all seven →First, the conversation. James explains what he is trying to achieve — long-term growth, some income, perhaps exposure to a particular theme — and over what time. He and the adviser go through what he already owns and the cash he holds, how involved he wants to remain, and the risks he is prepared and able to take. Nothing is proposed until that is understood.
Then the investment work. Synergy researches the question across the whole portfolio: which listed companies, and where appropriate which fixed-income investments, could serve his objectives; their valuation; the income they could provide; and how each would sit alongside what he already owns — adding diversification where it is missing, rather than concentrating him further where he is already exposed. It is research and judgement, not a formula.
Then the evidence. Synergy Intelligence, the firm’s own research capability, contributes what Synergy has already recorded: its latest recorded assessment of a company, what has changed, the views it has taken before and, where the comparison is fair, similar situations in its research history. It does not decide James’s portfolio. Intelligence adds evidence. The adviser makes the judgement.
Then the recommendation. The adviser turns that work into personal recommendations, made against James’s objectives and circumstances: the investments Synergy proposes, how much in each, and how they fit together as a portfolio. Each comes with the reasons and is confirmed in writing, and James knows what acting on it would cost before he acts.
And the relationship continues. Markets move, companies change, and so can James’s circumstances. The adviser can revisit the portfolio with him and bring forward further advice where appropriate, and James can come back to the adviser when he wants to talk something through. Every change is still his decision.
Research that stays with the relationship.
James chose advice because he wants to stay involved, and Synergy’s research does not stop at the recommendation. Synergy Intelligence, the firm’s own research capability, keeps a record of the views Synergy has taken on the companies it follows, and of how those views develop through time.
When James and his adviser talk, the adviser can take him through that research for the companies they are discussing — what Synergy is researching, what has changed, and how its recorded view has developed.
It does not replace personal advice. James’s investment decisions remain between him and his adviser.
Who decides
James decides. He may accept one recommendation and decline another, and nothing is bought or sold without his instruction. The advice and his decision both go on the file.
If you want a portfolio built around what you are trying to achieve, and to keep every decision, start with a conversation.
